How To Change Exhausts On Your Car
Posted by Charlie Dean | Posted in Modifying Your Car | Posted on 24-01-2009
Fitting a new, stylish exhaust is a good thing to do to your car. To do so, find a decent exhaust you like and follow these steps:
- Spray the existing exhaust clamp and rubber mountings with some WD-40.

- Undo the nut and bolt securing the tailpupe clamping ring. It doesn’t matter if the bolt shears as you can get another clamp. Another way round is the get the hacksaw to it. If you choose this method, be careful not to damage the exhaust centre section.
- The clamping ring can now be levered off the tailpipe using a flat-bladed screwdriver.
- Next, unhook the exhaust from the two rubber mountings and drop it out from under the car.
- Clean up the centre section joint with a cloth.

- Squirt some exhaust paste to help the joint seal nicely, so apply a majority of it to the pipe.
- Connect the shiny new backbox into place on the car and if it fits nicely, theres no extra work.
- Use a Jack to hold the exhaust in place while you fit the clamp.
- Slip the clamp into place and loosely fit the retaining bolt and nut. Don’t tighten the clamp fully until you have aligned the box on the rubber mountings.

- The bracket for one of the rubber mountings comes ready-welded to the box. You have to simply slide the metal bracket into the rubber. Now the Jack can be moved away.
- Use the wrap-around support bracket to slide onto the box. This will hook onto the remaining rubber mounting. The clamp nut has to be done up tight for it to work.
- Adjust the position is possible by undoing the clamp and support brack and moving the box by hand. Once you have found the correct position, tighten the nuts on the clamp and bracket. Then you’re done.
